India’s First Carbon Garden established in Department of Botany, University of Delhi to promote sustainability.

AN URBAN ECOSYSTEM SERVICES MODEL: A MINI BIODIVERSITY PARK

DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY, UNIVERSITY OF DELHI, DELHI-110007, INDIA

Carbon garden is an answer to combat the increasing air pollution and soil pollution. This will facilitate the plants and microorganisms to pull Carbon dioxide and some deadly pollutants from the atmosphere to the ground and enrich the depleted soil. Developed in a small 2000 sq. ft. area it is also a Mini Biodiversity Park inside the crowded city area. It has all types of life forms including Algae, Fungi, Bacteria, Bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Gymnosperm and Angiosperm. The garden has 45 plants species which includes herbs, shrubs and Trees. Besides, it has one of the oldest living organism spirulina (Arthospira). Further, bark of the trees host various types of microbiota, which consume gases like methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide and other volatile organic compounds. The "Bark Continent" harbours 6 trillion cells approximately per square meter of bark. Overall, this will improve air quality, urban biodiversity and mental well-being.
